E-Trader License in Dubai: A Simple Guide for 2026
Do you sell products on Instagram, take orders on WhatsApp, or offer a service online from your home in Dubai? If so, you need a license. Selling online without one can lead to fines.
For many people, the easiest option is the e-Trader license. It is low cost, you apply online, and you don’t need an office or shop.
This guide explains what the e-Trader license is, who can get it, what it costs, and how to apply. It also tells you when a different license is the better choice.

What is an e-Trader license?
An e-Trader license is a Dubai trade license for individuals who run a small business from home and sell online. You can sell through social media, messaging apps, or a website.
The license is in your own name. You are the only owner. It is not a company, so you are personally responsible for your business.
Dubai created this license so that small online sellers can work legally, and so that customers can trust who they are buying from.
Is e-Trader the same as “DED Trader” or “e-trade license”?
Yes. People use many names for the same license:
- e-Trader license
- DED Trader license
- e-trade or e-trading license
- online trade license
“DED” was the old name of Dubai’s economic department. It is now DET (Department of Economy and Tourism). The old “DED Trader” website has been replaced by the Invest in Dubai portal.
Who can get an e-Trader license in Dubai?
The basic requirements are:
- You live in Dubai and have a valid UAE residence visa (if you are not a UAE national).
- You have a valid Emirates ID.
- You are 21 years old or older.
- You will run the business alone, as one owner.
- You have a Dubai home address (with a Makani number or tenancy details).
If you live in another emirate, such as Sharjah or Abu Dhabi, this license is not for you. Other emirates have their own licensing authorities.
Can expats get an e-Trader license?
Yes, many expats can. But what you are allowed to do depends on your nationality and the activity you choose.
DET splits activities into two types:
- Professional activities are services, like graphic design, social media management, photography, tutoring, or consulting. Expats living in Dubai can generally apply for these.
- Commercial activities mean selling products, like clothes, handmade items, or cosmetics. These have mainly been for UAE and GCC nationals.
In 2026, some licensing centres reported that DET opened an “Online Seller” activity to all nationalities. Rules like this change, so check before you pay. On the Invest in Dubai portal, search for your activity. The portal shows if it is available for your nationality.
If you are an expat and the activity you need is not available, don’t worry. A free zone e-commerce license or a mainland company lets you sell products online. We explain both options later in this guide.
What can you do with an e-Trader license?
With an e-Trader license, you can legally:
- Sell products or services through Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, WhatsApp, or your own website
- Send invoices to your customers
- Use your trade name to build your brand
- Take part in some exhibitions and online events
Common examples include:
- Handmade jewellery, candles, or art
- Clothes, abayas, or accessories
- Home-baked cakes and food (extra approval needed)
- Graphic design, content writing, or social media services
- Photography or video editing
- Online tutoring or coaching
Do some activities need extra approval?
Yes. The e-Trader license alone is not always enough. For example:
- Home food and baking usually needs food safety approval from Dubai Municipality.
- Cosmetics and personal care products may need product registration. See our guide to cosmetic products registration in Dubai.
- Fitness, sports coaching, media, and education activities may need approval from the relevant authority, and some may not be open to expats.
Check this before you start selling.
What can’t you do with an e-Trader license?
The e-Trader license is simple, but it has limits. You cannot:
- Open a shop or physical store. It is for home-based and online business only.
- Sponsor visas. It does not give you a residence visa, and you cannot get visas for family or staff through it.
- Hire employees.
- Add partners. Only one person can own it.
- Do regulated activities such as medical services, legal services, financial services, or real estate brokerage.
- Run large-scale import, export, or distribution.
If you need any of these, you need a different type of license.
How much does an e-Trader license cost?
The e-Trader license is one of the cheapest ways to run a legal business in Dubai.
| Cost item | Approximate amount | Notes |
| License fee | About AED 1,070 | Paid to DET. Includes small government charges |
| Dubai Chamber membership | About AED 300 | Some sources say this applies to commercial activities |
| Transaction or service charges | Varies | May apply if you use a service centre or for certain steps |
| Extra approvals | Varies | Only if your activity needs them, like home food |
| Renewal | Similar to the first year | Paid every year |
So for most people, the government cost is around AED 1,070 to AED 1,370 per year, plus any extra approvals.
Your exact amount depends on your activity. You will see the final total on your payment voucher before you pay.
What documents do you need to get an E-Trade license?
Prepare these before you start:
- Emirates ID (valid)
- Passport copy
- UAE Pass account (to log in to the portal)
- Dubai address details (Makani number or tenancy contract details)
- Your chosen trade name (the name of your business)
- Details of your social media pages or website, if you have them
- No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer, if your job contract or visa requires it
How do you apply for an e-Trader license?
The whole process is online. Here are the steps:
- Check your activity. Go to the Invest in Dubai portal and search for what you want to do. Make sure it is available for your nationality.
- Log in with UAE Pass.
- Choose your business activity. Pick the activity that matches what you will actually sell or do.
- Choose a trade name. It must follow Dubai’s naming rules. Avoid offensive words, religious terms, and other companies’ brand names.
- Add your address and upload documents.
- Pay the fees using the payment voucher.
- Download your license and Dubai Chamber certificate.
- Get any extra approvals your activity needs before you start selling.
How long does it take?
If your documents are complete and your activity doesn’t need extra approval, the license can be issued very quickly, often within a day.
Delays usually happen when someone picks the wrong activity or needs approval from another authority.
Can you have a job and an e-Trader license at the same time?
Often, yes. Many people use the e-Trader license for a side business while they work a full-time job.
But check your employment contract first. Some employers don’t allow staff to run another business. In that case, you may need a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your employer.
Do you need to pay VAT or corporate tax to get an e-trader license?
It depends on how much you earn.
- VAT: You must register for VAT if your taxable sales go above AED 375,000 in 12 months. You can choose to register earlier once you pass AED 187,500.
- Corporate tax: Individuals running a business must register for UAE corporate tax if their business turnover goes above AED 1 million in a calendar year.
Most small e-Trader businesses are below these limits. But keep good records of your sales from day one. Read more about UAE corporate tax.
E-Trader license vs free zone vs mainland: which is right for you?
| E-Trader license | Free zone e-commerce license | Mainland e-commerce company | |
| Who can apply | Individuals living in Dubai (activity limits for some nationalities) | Anyone, including non-residents | Anyone |
| Owners | 1 person only | 1 or more | 1 or more |
| Office | Not needed, work from home | Usually a flexi desk or small office | Office needed |
| Visas | No | Yes, depending on package | Yes, depending on office size |
| Hire staff | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cost | Lowest | Medium | Higher |
| Best for | Small home business, side income, freelancers | Growing online stores, expats, people who need a visa | Businesses selling heavily inside the UAE, with staff or storage |
When is the e-Trader license not the right choice?
Choose a different license if:
- You are an expat and the product activity you need is not open to your nationality
- You need a residence visa through your business
- You want to hire staff or add a business partner
- You need a warehouse or plan to import stock in large amounts
- Your business is growing fast and needs a stronger structure
In these cases, a free zone or mainland company is usually a better fit. Our guide on how to start an e-commerce business in Dubai explains these options, and our Dubai e-commerce license cost guide shows what to budget.
